January 2021 Zoom updates for remote teaching

A few key Zoom updates this fall offer great improvements for remote teaching:

  • Self-select breakout rooms: this new option lets your meeting participants choose which breakout room to join.
  • Co-host features: Co-hosts now have the same breakout room controls as the meeting host, such as starting or ending breakout rooms, assigning participants, etc.
  • Zoom recordings to Panopto: If you are recording your class meetings in Zoom, we recommend you enable the new integration with Panopto, which automatically migrates all Zoom recordings to our video management tool. Fill out this form to get started.... Using Zoom to Teach Your Class Online

As an instructor, Zoom can help keep your class going if you or your students have a situation that keeps you from meeting in person. Synchronous online class sessions, where everyone joins a Zoom meeting at a scheduled time, is one way to create engagement when students are remote, but Zoom can also be used to support other teaching and learning scenarios. Zoom for Remote Teaching

FAS faculty, staff, and students have access to Zoom through Harvard’s institutional license, and Zoom is already installed on all FAS Canvas sites, enabling you to teach classes, hold sections, or conduct student meetings remotely. Zoom features include screen sharing, recording, breakout rooms, chat, adaptive streaming, and more!
