International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF)

logo for the International Image Interoperability Framework, IIIF
The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) defines universal standards for describing and delivering images over the web. Harvard was an early adopter of IIIF and has been instrumental in the development of the standard and of the associated image viewing application, Mirador.

While IIIF has achieved broad adoption in research and collections, it remains largely underutilized in teaching and learning. Academic Technology for FAS has taken a leading role in integrating this standard into pedagogical tools and practices.

Core supported applications that take advantage of IIIF include the Image Media Manager, which supports image curation and display; Omeka as a Service, which supports online exhibits of rich visual collections; and AnnotationsX, which provides a platform for collaborative annotation of text, images, and video.

To learn more, visit the IIIF at Harvard website or download the chapter "Stitching Together Technology for the Digital Humanities With the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF)," by Academic Technology for FAS associate director Jeff Emanuel.
