Time Extensions for Canvas Quizzes
If a student in your class has a time extension accommodation for assessments, and exams for your class are administered through Canvas, you will need to implement these adjustments on the Quizzes page for those exams. Depending on whether you are using the Classic or New Quizzes interface, this process will be slightly different.
The below condensed instructions are adapted from the lengthier tutorial on "Assign To" from Instructure.
While creating your quiz, you may have noticed a "Time Limit" option. Ignore this, as it does not support giving different students different time limits.
After creating your quiz, navigate to its quiz page, and then click the Assign To button in the top right.
- In the new right hand window, you will be able to add time assignments to the entire class, specific sections, or individual students by clicking the "+ Add" button. Each of these time assignments has a Due, Available From, and Available Until date, explained below
- The Available From date determines when students will be able to start taking their quiz. Prior to the available from date, if the quiz is published, students will be able to see the details page of the quiz, but will not be able to start it and see any of the content.
- The Available Until date determines when students will no longer be able to access the quiz.
- The Due date determines when students will begin to be marked as late.
To better understand these dates, consider the following example:
In this example, every student in the class will be able to start taking their quiz after 10:00AM. Students except Kevin Guiney will not be marked late if they submit sometime between 10:00am and 12:00PM, and will be marked late if they submit between 12:00PM and 3:00PM. Kevin's exam will instead only be marked late if Kevin submits between 1:00PM and 3:00PM.- The above is an example of how to give a single student a one hour time extension on the quiz. You can create as many time assignments as necessary for students with differing time extension accommodations.
In the "Build" interface of New Quizzes, click on the "Settings" tab. Enable the slider for "Time Limit", and input the amount of time students without accommodations will receive.
Next, go to the "Moderate" tab within the "Build" interface. Find a student who needs a time extension, and then click on the pencil icon on the far right end of their row in the table.
Under the "Assessment Settings" section of the right hand sliding window, click on the dropdown menu under "Time Adjustments" and select "Give Additional Time". Type in the amount of time you'd like to add to this student's time limit, and then click "Apply".
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 for all students who have time accommodations.
