Non Harvard affiliates need to first sign up for a Harvard Guest account 

After receiving a confirmation email. Log in for the first time https://guest.canvas.harvard.edu, which will then show a Canvas Dashboard with no classes added yet. 

After they may be added by teaching staff or administrators to the chosen Canvas site using the Manage Course > Manage People tool with the email they registered.

Harvard Guest will continue to need to log into Canvas using the guest login link. https://guest.canvas.harvard.edu.
