# Time Extensions for Canvas Quizzes

If a student in your class has a time extension accommodation for assessments, and exams for your class are administered through Canvas, you will need to implement these adjustments on the Quizzes page for those exams. Depending on whether you are using the Classic or New Quizzes interface, this process will be slightly different.

The below condensed instructions are adapted from the lengthier [tutorial on "Assign To" from Instructure](https://community.instructure.com/en/kb/articles/661025-how-do-i-assign-a-quiz-to-everyone-individual-students-differentiation-tags-or-sections).

1. While creating your quiz, you may have noticed a "Time Limit" option. Ignore this, as it does not support giving different students different time limits.

After creating your quiz, navigate to its quiz page, and then click the Assign To button in the top right.

![A view of a typical Canvas Classic Quiz page, with the Assign To button outlined in blue in the top right](/sites/g/files/omnuum11326/files/styles/hwp_1_1__960x960_scale/public/2026-03/Screenshot%202026-03-30%20at%202.52.12%E2%80%AFPM.png?itok=xZdVL5Uq)
2. In the new right hand window, you will be able to add time assignments to the entire class, specific sections, or individual students by clicking the "+ Add" button. Each of these time assignments has a **Due**, **Available From**, and **Available Until** date, explained below
    1. The **Available From** date determines when students will be able to start taking their quiz. Prior to the available from date, if the quiz is published, students will be able to see the details page of the quiz, but will not be able to start it and see any of the content.
    2. The **Available Until** date determines when students will no longer be able to access the quiz.
    3. The **Due** date determines when students will begin to be marked as late.
3. To better understand these dates, consider the following example:

![An example of two different Canvas time assignments. Details about their differences follow in the next paragraph.](/sites/g/files/omnuum11326/files/styles/hwp_1_1__960x960_scale/public/2026-03/Screenshot%202026-03-30%20at%202.58.55%E2%80%AFPM.png?itok=mcT17AQD)

In this example, every student in the class will be able to start taking their quiz after 10:00AM. Students except Kevin Guiney will not be marked late if they submit sometime between 10:00am and 12:00PM, and will be marked late if they submit between 12:00PM and 3:00PM. Kevin's exam will instead only be marked late if Kevin submits between 1:00PM and 3:00PM.
4. The above is an example of how to give a single student a one hour time extension on the quiz. You can create as many time assignments as necessary for students with differing time extension accommodations.
