Martin Wattenberg and Fernanda Viégas, leaders of Google’s PAIR (People+AI Research) initiative and new SEAS faculty, will speak on Emotion in Data Visualization.</p><p>	<a data-url="/" href="internal:/" title="https://harvard.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUtc--qqTstHtNw6rF4y-qq5McKJNlA2-L2">Please Register in advance here</a></p><p>	 </p><p>	About the Presenters:</p><p>	 </p><p>	The research of data visualization pioneers Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg has helped define visualization as a field, creating interactive and open-source tools for examining a wide range of scientific, social, and artistic questions. The long-time collaborators are co-leads of Google's <a href="https://ai.google/research/teams/brain/pair" rel="noopener" target="_blank">PAIR (People + AI Research)</a> initiative, a team whose goal is to advance the research and design of people-centric AI systems. In addition to inventing tools to illuminate systems based on machine learning and artificial intelligence – for products used daily by millions of people, such as Search, YouTube, and Google Analytics – their artwork has been exhibited at the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the London Institute of Contemporary Arts, among others.  </p><p>	Wattenberg, who joined Harvard in fall 2021, and Viégas who will start in spring 2022, hold appointments as Gordon McKay Professors of Computer Science at the <a href="https://www.seas.harvard.edu/">Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Science</a> (SEAS). Both also will be affiliated with <a href="https://www.hbs.edu/Pages/default.aspx" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Harvard Business School</a> (HBS), and Viégas will be the Sally Starling Seaver Professor at the <a href="https://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study</a>.</p><h2>	About the Harvard Discovery Series</h2><p>	Formerly known as The Digital Futures Discovery Series, the <a href="https://dssg.fas.harvard.edu/discovery-series/">Harvard Discovery Series</a> is a collaboration between Cabot Science Library and the Harvard University Digital Scholarship Group (DSSG). This event series brings scholars on the frontiers of digital knowledge-making to a Harvard audience in an intimate and interactive setting.
